12 Things To Do In Gloucester

1. Gloucester Cathedral

Perhaps the most iconic building in Gloucester, the Cathedral has an equally remarkable history. Since its founding as the Abbey of St Peer in 679 by Osric, King of Hwicce it has played host to many pivotal moments in English history.

2. The New Inn

The New Inn is the finest example of a medieval galleried inn to be seen in Britain today.

3. Gloucester Folk Museum

The folk museum built in 16th century is home to a wonderfully eclectic mix of artefacts relating to the city and the county’s people and history.

4. St Mary de Crypt

This impressive parish church dates from the Norman period but was largely rebuilt in the 14th century.

5. Gloucester Docks

As an ancient port and later when official port status was granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1580. The docks host an aray of maritime history, retail outlets and fabulous contemporary landscaping.

6. The Old Bell

Very close to the cross stand the Old Bell and Bakers Clock, two bells with so much history.

7. Beatrix Potter Museum

The House of the Tailor of Gloucester is familiar to adults and children the world over thanks to an illustration in a rather famous story book!!

8. 26 Westgate Street

Like so many other buildings in Westgate Street this superb 16th century town house had its street elevation remodelled in the early 19th century.

9. Blackfriars

During the middle ages, English royalty had often held a strong connection             with Gloucester. None more so than King Henry III who was crowned at St      Peters Abbey (todays Cathedral).

10. Robert Raikes Inn

A 16th century building, housed the Gloucester Journal printing office which would eventually be merged with The Citizen, the city’s newspaper to this day. 

11. Brunswick Square

Following the discovery of saline springs nearby in 1814, a Spa company was formed by Sir James Jelf and a pump room built in Spa Road opposite the southern end of Brunswick Road.

12. St Oswalds Priory

The standing remains are of the north wall of the church built by Queen Aethelflaed in c.900 AD. The surviving arcade also contains features from alterations and additions made in 12th and 13th centuries.

- Village of Winchcombe – Winchcombe is a small, unspoilt Cotswold town where you will still find a wealth of unique shops and places to eat and drink. It is an ideal base for walking in the Cotswolds being at the intersection of the Cotswold Way, the Gloucestershire Way, the Wardens Way, the Windrush Way, the Wychavon Way and the unofficial St Kenelm's Way.Visit Sudeley Castle close to the village and have lunch at the White Hart Inn.

- Historic old wool town of Tetbury – a town within the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire. It lies on the site of an ancient hill Tetbury became an important market for Cotswold wool and the Woolsack races. in which competitors must carry a 60 pound sack of wool up a steep hill, were founded and are still contested annually. It is a great place to hunt for antiques, visit the nearby Westonbirt Arboretum and have lunch at the Snooty Fox Hotel.
